Alien: Isolation is officially getting a sequel, with the original game director returning.
Developer Creative Assembly and publisher Sega are celebrating Alien: Isolation’s 10-year anniversary in the best way possible: by announcing a long-awaited sequel. Despite reports that most of the original game’s development had already left Creative Assembly, game director Al Hope has confirmed his return to helm the sequel.
The new Alien: Isolation game is currently in “early development.”
Alien: Isolation sequel confirmed in early development
Alien: Isolation, the 2014 survival horror game that followed Amanda Ripley’s mission to discover the fate of her mother - Ellen Ripley - in Xenomorph-infested surroundings, is finally getting a sequel. The game was originally released to underwhelming global sales, causing Creative Assembly and Sega to put further Alien games on the shelf post-release. However, fan reception of the game has been improving over the last few years, with ardent fans considering it the most suspenseful and faithful Alien game to date.
It’s a damn shame that the game didn’t perform well enough to earn a sequel immediately, but fans played the long game and it has worked out shockingly well for them. Today, Sega and the official Alien: Isolation Twitter/X account confirmed that the game is getting a sequel, with original game director Al Hope returning to work on the project.
Hope’s announcement doesn’t confirm if all of the original game’s staff is returning to develop the sequel, however - only that he will be involved in some capacity along with Creative Assembly. In the announcement, which starts off by thanking fans for playing Alien: Isolation, Hope wrote:
Today, I'm delighted to confirm, on behalf of the team, that a sequel to Alien: Isolation is in early development. We look forward to sharing more details with you when we're ready.
Sega’s unexpected greenlighting of this sequel could have something to do with the Alien franchise as a whole having a resurgence in mainstream popularity right now. Alien Romulus, released earlier this year, proved to be a financial and critical success in theaters. A TV adaptation of the franchise titled Alien: Earth is also in the works at FX, set to debut in 2025.
