Monster Hunter Wilds shows off new gameplay trailer
Capcom dropped a new trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds during Gamescom Opening Night Live, diving deeper into the game’s open world locales and monsters. The trailer begins in the Scarlet Forest, a new locale in the Forbidden Lands. As its name suggests, the forest is coloured a morbid shade of red, thanks to a channel of crimson-coloured water underneath its green trees.
Here, a Temnoceran monster called Lala Barina resides. The spider-like creature is covered in white fur and hops around the battlefield quickly, attacking players with its stinger. It can unfold its thorax at will to look like a blooming rose. Arachnophobes will find this creature to be an extremely unpleasant encounter, but one they’ll have to face in the Scarlet Forest nevertheless.
The trailer also shows off more of Monster Hunter Wilds’ environments, which can change radically at a moment’s notice. During the Fallow period for example, hungry predators can become more aggressive as they roam the land in search of food. According to a PlayStation Blog post, the Fallow period is typically followed by a locale’s Inclemency, which is a harsh ecological event that can change its ecosystem. Apex predators can be encountered during Inclemency.
In the Windward Plains, its Inclemency takes the form of a massive thundering sandstorm called the Sandtide. At the end of the Inclemency, a Plenty period begins where a locale begins to teem with life once again. During the Inclemency in the Windward plains however, players will be able to encounter the fearsome Rey Dau.
After only being seen in quick glimpses in previous trailers, the latest one now shows Rey Dau in all his fearsome majesty. This flying wyvern boasts powerful physical attacks with its wings as well as lightning strikes from a specialised set of horns on its head. This monster will appear during the Sandtide, accompanied by the lightning strikes it can bend to its will that can even turn the sand into glass. The trailer also introduces a few new characters like the Hunter’s Guild member Olivia and her Palico Athos, who join the Hunter in the Forbidden Lands.
The presence of Olivia also confirms the return of the Follower system from Monster Hunter Rise, now called the Support Hunter system in Wilds that will allow players to call in help from NPC Support Hunters. They can also fire off an SOS flare to request assistance from up to three other hunters in online multiplayer. These flares can be switched between ‘player only’ or ‘support hunter only’ settings. Players will also have a Base Camp in the Windward Plains to serve as their base of operations. Here, they can visit the smithy to get new gear, buy items, cook food and so on.
Monster Hunter Wilds will also feature meals, a recurring feature in every game in the franchise. Now, players will be able to cook anywhere without returning to camp by using a Portable BBQ Grill, which increases their strength and stats temporarily. They’ll also be able to set a Pop-up camp in the open world, allowing them to fast travel, return after fainting, manage their equipment, and start new quests.
Monster Hunter Wilds launches sometime in 2025.
