A live-action Street Fighter movie is in the works.
A live-action movie based on Capcom’s fighting game franchise Street Fighter is set to hit theaters on March 20, 2026. Legendary Entertainment will co-produce and develop the movie with Capcom, after securing film and TV rights to the franchise back in April. No further information on the movie’s plot and creative team has been made public as of now, but it looks like both Legendary and Sony Pictures are looking to fast-track its production.
Street Fighter movie confirms 2026 release date, loses directors
Legendary Entertainment announced that it had acquired the film and TV rights to the Street Fighter franchise back in April this year, and immediately brought on the directing duo behind the 2022 horror movie Talk to Me (Danny and Michael Philippou) to direct a movie adaptation. However, the brothers announced their departure from the project in June, due to it conflicting with the production schedule of their next movie.
Despite losing its directors, however, Sony Pictures is going full steam ahead with production on the movie. The studio has shared a new release date for the movie, March 20, 2026, and will likely now look for a new creative team. This will be the third Street Fighter adaptation attempted for the big screen, with the first being the infamous 1994 movie Street Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen and Kylie Minogue.
In 2009, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li hit theatres, starring Kristin Kreuk in the titular role. Both movies ended up flopping at the box office, though the original 1994 movie has at least earned a cult following in the years since its release. You know what they say about Street Fighter movie adaptations: third time’s a charm.
Street Fighter won’t be the only game adaptation to hit theatres in 2026, however. Nintendo recently announced that its sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to release on April 3, 2026, in the US and April 24, 2026, in Japan.
