Assassin's Creed: Black Flag might be the first of many future remakes in the franchise.
Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot has confirmed that multiple Assassin’s Creed game remakes are currently in development. Guillemot revealed the franchise is getting, “some remakes,” in an interview on Ubisoft’s official website, which focuses on the company’s upcoming portfolio and the future of Assassin’s Creed.
Assassin’s Creed remakes are in the works at Ubisoft
In an interview on Ubisoft’s official website, CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that the company is already hard at work on remakes for multiple titles in the Assassin’s Creed game franchise. When asked about the company’s plans for the franchise, Guillemot said, “Firstly, players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them; there are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich.”
This lines up with recent reports that the company has multiple Assassin’s Creed remakes in development, one of which is planned for release by the end of the decade: in 2023, Kotaku reported that the pirate-focused Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is getting a remake. This was later corroborated by Insider Gaming, along with a second unidentified Assassin’s Creed remake. Assassin’s Creed (2007) is long due a remake at this point, but nothing has been confirmed as of now.
Guillemot also mentioned that the franchise will have more variety in the future, with the goal of having, “Assassin's Creed games come out more regularly, but not for it to be the same experience every year.” The CEO specifically singles out Assassin’s Creed Hexe, a future mainline entry that will be, “a very different game from Assassin's Creed Shadows. We're going to surprise people, I think.”
In the interview, Guillemot also touched on the ways Ubisoft plans to innovate with its future open world games, starting with Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ weather system:
“In Assassin's Creed Shadows, for example, we have a weather system that will affect its gameplay; ponds that were once swimmable might freeze, for instance. Visually, we're also seeing a big step forward for the series. I have also been very vocal about the potential I see in generative AI and how it can enrich NPCs to be more intelligent, more interactive. This could potentially extend to animals in the world, to the world itself. There is still so much we can do to enrich these open worlds to be even more dynamic.”
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to launch on November 15, followed by the mobile game Assassin’s Creed Jade in 2025. Assassin’s Creed Hexe will be the next mainline entry in the series, launching sometime in 2026.
