First trailer for Amazon's Fallout series teases mutants and explosions

Image: Amazon Prime Video

The first trailer for Amazon’s Fallout adaptation looks surprisingly good, featuring vaults, Dogmeat and nuclear explosions galore.

Amazon Prime Video has finally dropped the first trailer for its upcoming live-action adaptation of the Fallout game franchise. The trailer looks shockingly good but light on plot details, with a dark-but-goofy tone that fans of the games will appreciate. The series comes from Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and starts streaming next year.

Also, Dogmeat is in it! That’s a good boy. Watch the trailer below:

What we spotted in Fallout's first trailer

The teaser trailer kicks off with very familiar imagery for Fallout fans: a Vault Dweller exiting their vault for the first time. In this case, we see series protagonist Lucy (Arcane’s Ella Purnell) exiting Vault 33 hundreds of years after the world was irradiated by a nuclear war. A sudden crisis causes her to venture into post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, where new threats emerge in the form of mutated creatures and violent bandits.

The inhabitants of Vault 33 have led fairly comfortable lives underground while humanity suffered on the surface of a dangerous planet, so they might have trouble fitting in with their new friends on top. The rest of the trailer shows us what Lucy’s adventures in this strange and violent world might entail, from encountering giant radroaches to the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) shooting up a base with Dogmeat in tow. Almost every Fallout game has featured a dog companion, and all of them are universally named Dogmeat. This time, however, Dogmeat appears to be the Ghoul’s companion and not the Vault Dweller’s.

We also see a glimpse of the Ghoul’s life before the nuclear apocalypse as a family man, and power armour-wearing members of the Brotherhood of Steel. It looks like series creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are adhering to the tone of the games here, keeping the violence and dark imagery of the franchise intact without sacrificing its humour and inherent silliness.

Here’s Amazon’s description of Fallout:

Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them. From executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of Westworld, starring Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins and more. Arriving April 12 on Prime Video.

Fallout hits Amazon Prime Video on April 12, 2023.
