Mortal Kombat 1’s first post-launch DLC fighter is Omni-Man from Invincible, complete with a brutal train fatality.
NetherRealm Studios came to New York Comic Con 2023 to share a first look at Mortal Kombat 1’s upcoming DLC fighter: Omni-Man from the Image Comics superhero series Invincible. The Viltrumite superhero with a penchant for violence will be voiced by actor J.K. Simmons, who reprises the role from Amazon Prime Video’s animated adaptation Invincible.
Here’s the first-look trailer:
Invincible gets a crossover with Mortal Kombat
The trailer description reads, “The realms will tremble under the weight of the Viltrum Empire. Omni-Man approaches our timeline.” It sounds like NetherRealm is using this game’s multiversal plot to establish upcoming crossover fighters in its lore, starting with Omni-Man. At first glance, Omni-Man appears to be a tanky fighter who uses super speed and flight to get around the map more easily, before dealing heavy blows to the enemy.
Anyone who has seen Prime Video’s Invincible adaptation will also recognise a few scenes here ripped right out of the series: Omni-Man gouging someone’s eyes out like he did in the pilot, almost caving another’s face in with a series of punches, and putting Scorpion through the infamous train sequence. Omni-Man is not a good guy, but he seems to fit right in with the rest of Mortal Kombat 1’s roster of trigger-happy fighters.
More DLC fighters to come
The reveal trailer also gave us a first look at Tremor, a ninja with the abilities of an Earth Elemental who last appeared in Mortal Kombat X. Tremor is a Kameo fighter, with four more to come via the Kombat Pack DLC: Ferra, Janet Cage, Khameleon and Mavado. The DLC pack also brings six new fighters to the game including Omni-Man: Quan Chi (Winter 2023/2024), DC Comics’ Peacemaker (Winter 2023/2024), Ermac (Spring 2024), The Boys’ Homelander (Spring 2024) and Takeda Takahashi (Summer 2024).
Now for a bit of bad news: Mortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack, which includes all of these DLC fighters, costs a hefty $39.99 - and none of its content is technically available yet. You’ll also have to fork out a bit more to play as Shang Tsung, which reeks of bad monetisation considering he plays a massive role in the campaign.
