Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are now playable on the Nintendo Switch.

Today’s Nintendo Direct revealed the arrival of a selection of Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on the Nintendo Switch. A few games from these classic handheld gaming consoles have been added to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription package, and a few more Game Boy Advance titles will be playable via the more expensive Expansion Pack tier.

Check out the announcement trailer below:

If you’re feeling nostalgic for Nintendo’s bygone Game Boy era, this should be a pretty nice surprise for you - as long as you’re willing to fork up for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. This initial drop of games includes Super Mario Land: 6 Golden Coins, Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, Tetris, Metroid 2, Wario Land 3, Kirby's Dream Land, Gargoyle's Quest, Game & Watch Gallery 3, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare.

You can safely expect Nintendo to keep adding Game Boy games to this lineup over the coming months, including older Pokemon and Super Mario titles. Two players can play these games together wirelessly, and multiple screen filters are available to simulate the retro feel of these older games. Nintendo also mentioned that The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Ages, Pokemon: Trading Card Game and Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble will be added to the service soon.

If you’re subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack tier, you’ll get access to newer Game Boy Advance games like Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, WarioWare Inc. Minigame Mania, Kuru Kuru Kururin, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap. That is in addition to the Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 games already included in this tier.

A few more Game Boy Advance games are planned to launch in the Expansion Pack tier soon, including F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Metroid Fusion, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and Golden Sun. These games certainly add more value to your Nintendo Switch Online subscription, that’s for sure.
