Activision will reportedly replace 2023's Call of Duty with Modern Warfare 2 expansion

We're not getting a new Call of Duty game in 2023, but we are getting a Modern Warfare 2 expansion to make up for it.

Call of Duty has historically been an annual franchise since 2005, but all of that comes to an end next year. While we already know that Activision is planning to skip a main Call of Duty release in 2023, a new report suggests that a Modern Warfare 2 expansion will fill that gap instead.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches later this month, and Activision reportedly has big plans for the title going into 2023. Call of Duty insider TheGhostOfHope tweeted that the sequel will receive a ‘greatest hits map pack’ that features remade maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) among other fan favourites. While this should satisfy multiplayer fans, those invested in Modern Warfare’s rebooted story won’t be left behind either.

According to the insider, this map pack will come bundled with a paid expansion to Modern Warfare 2’s story campaign. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who originally reported that the Call of Duty franchise would skip 2023, corroborated the report by tweeting that, “Next year they'll be selling new stuff for MW2, an expansion or something like that.” It sounds like fans won’t have to wait too long to see what Task Force 141 gets up to next.

While the main Call of Duty franchise takes a break next year, Activision isn’t content to just sit around while there’s money to be made. Developer Treyarch is already working on a new Black Ops game for 2024, and the studio will also publish a, “new free-to-play online title,” next year according to Schreier. The battle royale sequel Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 will launch on November 16, and you can expect Activision to support the game with new content throughout next year.

Microsoft will inherit the Call of Duty franchise once its $68 billion acquisition deal of Activision-Blizzard-King goes through next year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will launch on October 28, 2022 on all platforms.
