Rick and Morty's God of War: Ragnarok ad makes for a weird crossover

Rick and Morty roleplay as Kratos and Atreus in this new PlayStation promo.

PlayStation has crossed over with Adult Swim for an unconventional God of War: Ragnarok promo, featuring the dimension-hopping duo of Rick and Morty. The new video was released alongside Rick and Morty’s Season 6 premiere this week, to promote Ragnarok’s November 9 release date.

Watch it below:

This promo has it all: Rick shaving his head to emulate Kratos’ appearance before opening up a portal to the Nine Realms, and Morty getting eaten alive by Odin’s ravens while holding a toy bow and arrow. Morty puts forth the main question playing on our minds: “Why is this happening?” to which Rick replies, “Why do we have to do anything?”

Morty suggests, “Money?” but Rick sighs, “Yeah, but not this time.” That’s true enough, seeing as this is just the latest promo Rick and Morty have done for PlayStation Studios. They did an ad for Death Stranding a while back, and then another promo for the PlayStation 5 console soon after. This new one was almost certainly done for the money too, but still.

One bit has Rick open up a chest to steal Kratos’ Leviathan Axe for himself, while noting that it also contains, “other unannounced upgrades.” We might be reading too much into a 30-second animated ad here, but we’d bet anything there’s a secret weapon hiding in that chest. God of War (2018) didn’t reveal the existence of the Blades of Chaos as usable weapons until its release, after all.

God of War: Ragnarok will cap off Kratos and his son Atreus’ journey in the Nordic realm in a huge finale that will see them cross paths with Thor himself. The sequel is set to arrive on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on November 9, 2022, and so far seems on track to make that date. Ubisoft’s pirate game Skull and Bones and Sega’s Sonic Frontiers will both launch the day before on November 8. That's a pretty good week for gaming, all things considered.
