Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II reveals first gameplay and Warzone 2.0

We finally have our first look at Activision’s sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Developer Infinity Ward has finally popped the lid off its sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), and it looks like a big one. Titled Modern Warfare II, the blockbuster sequel features a single player campaign that aims to be more exciting than its predecessor along with a bunch of new multiplayer modes.

Watch the gameplay trailer below:

Modern Warfare II brings back Task Force 141 - consisting of Captain Price, Ghost, Soap, Gaz and Laswell - as they work to neutralise a terrorist conspiracy across the globe. The team will find a new ally in Colonel Alejandro Vargas of the Mexican Special Forces, and plenty of new antagonists to face off against in their mission. It looks like a Russian force is the game’s main villain, making for interesting timing given Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.

Of course, the story campaign is just one half of the Call of Duty experience. Modern Warfare II’s multiplayer is getting bigger maps compared to Modern Warfare (2019), with the studio taking inspiration from its work on Call of Duty: Warzone. There will also be smaller maps designed for 6v6 game modes, and an, “evolved special ops game mode featuring tactical co-op gameplay,” which has you work together with other players.

That’s not all, though! Activision confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone is coming to mobile devices as part of a, “new era,” for the Warzone franchise. Also kicking off this new era is the fact that all Call of Duty games, including Modern Warfare II, will be built on an all-new shared engine to ensure all of the studios working on titles in the franchise have access to the same tools. A sequel to Call of Duty: Warzone is coming later this year and is being treated as, “an extension of the Modern Warfare II universe,” presumably built with this new engine.

Warzone will continue as its own standalone product, but will not share any form of cross-progression or shared content with Warzone 2.0. The battle royale sequel will also pull from many new improvements made in Modern Warfare II, including giving players the ability to swim and new driving mechanics. Modern Warfare II is also making big improvements to AI enemies in its story campaign, with enemy soldiers now able to check around corners and flee from combat if their lives are threatened. This new enemy AI system might make its way over to Warzone 2.0 too.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will launch on October 28, 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The game will surprisingly also launch on Steam, which a Call of Duty game hasn’t done in many years.
