Team Zero delivers big upset in China as the first team qualified for The International 2024

After a full three-game series, Team Zero secured a spot for TI13, becoming the first team to qualify for the pinnacle of all Dota 2 events.

Only six invites were bestowed directly to the teams. Of those, it was only Xtreme Gaming from China that received one. The rest of China was left to battle things out. Unlike last year when the region was given only one slot, this year they were bestowed two – which was a small consolation prize given how many notable teams and players were competing for a spot.

The day started on a low note with LGD Gaming. Former LGD star players Lu "Somnus" Yao and Yang "Chalice" Shenyi, now reunited under Team Turtle swept through the famed organization 2:0 marking the first time since The International 2012 (TI2) that LGD won’t make an appearance at the Dota 2 flagship tournament.

From there it was another quick 2:0 in the lower brackets as G2xiG sent Kev packing before heading into a three-game upper bracket final for the first TI spot.

Azure Ray's new lineup was quite fearsome. They participated in all of the big events for the season and narrowly missed out on enough qualifying points for the Riyadh Masters next month. Most fans were probably expecting to see this lineup make it through. But for now, that is on hold.

As it stands, it was Team Zero that came out ahead in the bo3! Team Zero is the second Dota 2 team of Xtreme Gaming formed in May 2023. Playing in only qualifiers so far this season (with the exception of ONE Tier 3 event), this team was barely a blip on the qualifier radar. Yet now with some fantastic plays by Yang "Erika" Shaohan and Remus "ponlo" Goh grinding it out in several regions has paid off.

But not all is lost for Azure Ray. There is still a chance for them to grace the stage of TI – albeit they need to fight either Team Turtle or G2xiG for the spot which will be a tough battle now.

The action for China will resume tomorrow, Thursday, June 13th at 06:00 CEST with the lower bracket semi-finals. It will be followed by the lower bracket finals awarding one more team a chance to head to Copenhagen for The International 2024.

For The International, there will be only six regions – sorry MENA, you are lumped in with WEU as usual.

The International 2024 (TI13)

The International 2024 is set to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark in September at the Royal Arena. This will mark the second time The International is coming to Europe, but the first time when, hopefully, fans will be able to attend. The first time Valve tried to bring its most prestigious tournament to Europe was in 2020 when the pandemic hit the world. TI10 was postponed for 2021 and moved from Sweden to Romania, and although tickets were sold, a new wave of coronavirus forced Valve to refund all tickets and hold the tournament in an empty stadium in Bucharest. Since then, TI moved to Singapore in 2022 and last year it returned home, to Seattle.

China will have another team qualify for The International 2024 later tomorrow as well as North America, so stay tuned, and for more match results and updates on the go don't forget to check out our Telegram channel.
