South America’s young guns are here to write a new chapter for their region.
South America has been on the rise for a few years, constantly injecting new talent into the scene and becoming a fierce contender on the international stage. The region’s peak was achieved at last year’s The International when for the first time ever, SA had four teams competing at the pinnacle Dota 2 event. However, none of their teams made it even to the top 8 at TI12, and entering a new season, where the DPC was discontinued, SA is now in free fall.
beastcoast was once the most successful organisation from SA. From first to reach top 6 at a Dota 2 Major, first to reach top 8 on The International stage, beastcoast were forced to reinvent themselves in 2024. After a disastrous exit in the bottom four at TI12, the organisation lost its entire roster and it took a couple of months before being ready to introduce a new team.
At the end of January 2024, beastcoast revealed a team of youngsters with little to no competitive experience, led in battle by Joel "MoOz" Ozambela, who at 24 years old is the only veteran on the team. Another SA veteran is there to help the team nurture their youngsters. Mariano "Papita" Caneda sits in the coaching seat working closely with MoOz to get the team ready for the big battle at The International 2024.

From all players on the new roster, MoOz is the only one to have LAN experience and to have played on the TI stage before. He switched from soft to hard support for this iteration of beastcoast, and although he is the captain, he is establishing a shared responsibilities type of teamwork inside the game, encouraging everyone to be vocal and make calls at different moments of the game. He is taking his captain role more seriously outside the game, trying to use his experience in the scene to help the youngsters on their road to The International.
It took him and beastcoast about five months to land a crucial victory with the new roster. Having players with around 200 professional games, beastcoast struggled even in domestic competitions. They’ve been constantly knocked out of contention for a qualifier spot to the many tournaments of 2024 by BOOM Esports.
However, they never lost sight of the big goal and in June, the squad was ready to land those crucial victories. They took revenge over BOOM Esports, first in the Riyadh Masters 2024 regional qualifiers and a couple of weeks later in The International 2024 regional qualifier battle.
Riyadh Masters 2024 marked beastcoast’s first big tournament in the new formula and the first opportunity to get a feel of what it’s like to compete against the top teams in the world.
While they don’t have the competitive experience, beastcoast benefits from having some of SA’s most mechanically skilled players.
Payk, their carry, might have just under 250 professional games played, 100 being held only this year, since he joined beastcoast. But his determination is what got him noticed in the first place. beastcoast laid eyes on him when he climbed America's leaderboards from top 300 to top 20 in about a week. He has a deep hero pool, which allows the team to stay at the top of the meta trends while also coming with a few unorthodox strategies. Through the play-in and group stage at Riyadh Masters, payk played 15 different carries, going from conventional Ursa, Sven or Phantom Assassin to Shadow Fiend, Marci or Pudge. He is also one of the carry players who tried the Windranger carry before it was cool.
beastcoast’s mid-laner is also someone with a deep hero pool and a lot of heroes he can swap around with either payk or with Vitaly.
beastcoast most successful hero pairings before TI13
With two weeks to go before The International 2024, beastcoast have been busy trying to secure a spot at PGL Wallachia Season 2 LAN, which will take place in October. They fell short of a qualifier ticket, but they used this opportunity to test their ideas on the new meta.
The qualifier battle started on the 7.37 patch and MoOz had already shown his support Tinker. However, a day after the competition began, the 7.37b gameplay update that nerfed Tinker hit the servers and MoOz went back to Sven support for exotic picks. Despite the carry Lina also being slightly nerfed in 7.37b, payk still found success with it, so he might keep it in his repertoire for TI13 if no other patch will be deployed until September 4, when the group stage matches begin.
If you are looking for a dark horse to support at TI13, beastcoast is the best one you can find among the 16 participating teams. It will be an extraordinary story to tell if the SA young guns manage to deliver the big upsets in Copenhagen. They lack the experience and they know nothing about what type of a beast TI is, therefore they have nothing to lose and that’s what makes them scary.
