After a spectacular winning streak, G2 has become the champions of IEM Katowice after defeating Heroic 3-1.
G2 Esports have emerged as the new IEM Katowice champions after defeating Heroic in the tournament’s grand finals. The European team went 3-1 after an intense best-of-five series of matches, and even broke a record for the second-longest streak of map wins in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive esports history to boot.
Suffice it to say, this has been a pretty great week for G2. An intense series of matches culminated with Nikola ‘NiKo’ Kovac and Nemanja ‘huNter-’ Kovac lifting the championship trophy together, in what was undoubtedly a cathartic moment for the two cousins. This was also Justin ‘jks’ Savage’s second IEM Katowice win running, having previously won in 2022 while standing in for FaZe. The player must be having a field day with his two consecutive wins and at this point, who can blame him? He’s the only player in the tournament's history to achieve such a feat.
G2 ended the grand finals with a spectacular finish, winning the maps Nuke and Mirage to continue an unbelievable map-winning streak. The team started the grand finals with a 19-map winning streak, and went on to drop just one map in the best-of-five, thus allowing them to nab the coveted trophy without having lost a single series along the way. This is the second-longest map win streak in CS:GO history, behind Ninjas in Pyjamas who scored 87 map wins in a row between 2012 and 2013.
G2 scored a big win this week, and time will tell how much further this team can stretch out its epic series of victories.
