First GTA 6 trailer reveals Vice City setting and 2025 release date

Rocktar’s first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 already looks like a stunning upgrade over its predecessor.

Rockstar Games has dropped its reveal trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 a tad early, following a leak of the video online. The trailer is pretty substantial too, unveiling the new open-world game’s neon-soaked setting of Vice City and its dual protagonists. The city is based on modern-day Miami, Florida and it already looks like a breathtaking step up from GTA 5’s Los Santos. The streets are alive with activity, robberies are commonplace and alligators are everywhere they shouldn’t be.

That’s GTA, alright. The trailer also confirms that GTA 6 will only launch in 2025, which gives Rockstar plenty of time to market this behemoth. Watch the trailer below:

A quick analysis of the GTA 6 trailer

The pressure has been on for Rockstar to deliver its first GTA 6 trailer, considering that this is the studio’s long-anticipated sequel to the absolute global smash hit that was GTA 5. Fortunately, the trailer doesn’t disappoint. In a one-and-a-half minute video set to Tom Petty’s ‘Love is a Long Road’, we’re introduced to the game’s dual protagonists Jason and Lucia as they embark on a new adventure in Vice City.

The original Vice City was based on a heightened 1980s version of Miami, Florida, but GTA 6 is taking a decidedly more modern approach here. Rockstar says, “Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.” Vice City itself is based on current-day Miami, renowned for its stunning beaches, lively nightlife and colourful occupants — to put the latter mildly.

The trailer uses social media footage to show off various happenings in Vice City — including Karens being caught on camera being Karens, boozy yacht parties, alligators in pools, women twerking on cars and alligators roaming convenience stores. If there’s one thing we know about this game so far, it’s that the player will have to deal with alligators. There are also lots of camera and newscast footage of indoor police arrests and traffic pile-ups in the streets.

It’s a pretty effective introduction to the chaos Vice City represents, and the two people setting out to take advantage of it: Lucia and an unnamed man, a couple who seemingly plan to commit crimes all over the city and get out scot-free by sticking together. Rockstar has also confirmed that there will be more locations for players to explore beyond the city, much like the rural wilderness surrounding Los Santos in GTA 5.

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will launch in 2025 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Unfortunately, a PC version has not been confirmed yet.
