Wingman, Overpass and Vertigo return as Valve tests out more content for Counter-Strike 2.
Counter-Strike 2’s limited beta continues to get new updates as Valve test-runs more of the sequel’s content before a full release later this summer. This week’s patch has added Valve’s first overhauled map for the sequel, Overpass, and the 2v2 game mode Wingman.
The new update removes Nuke and Office from Counter-Strike 2’s playlists, but adds Overpass and Vertigo. Valve calls Overpass its ‘first overhauled map’ and it’s easy to see why - it looks like the biggest upgrade a map from CS:GO has received yet, with brighter visuals and remade environments all in keeping with the original’s format. I mean, just look at those water physics:
It’s beautiful. The game’s high-rise map Vertigo has also been added to the limited beta test with a similarly beautiful makeover, though Overpass is clearly the more touched-up of the two maps. Valve typically doesn’t drop more than one refurbished map in a patch, so this change could mean that the company is ramping up its content testing in anticipation of an imminent release.
The patch also adds a returning 2v2 game mode called Wingman, which puts players in smaller maps than usual to hunt down an enemy team with just one other teammate. This game mode boils down the tense tactical gameplay Counter-Strike is known for into an even tighter, more high-stakes mode where just one mistake could spell doom. Overpass is currently playable in Wingman, Casual, Competitive and Deathmatch game modes, while Vertigo is only playable in Deathmatch and Casual.
Besides these additions, the rest of the update’s content consists mostly of bug fixes and little changes, like making the halftime countdown timer visible. Counter-Strike 2 is still set for a full release this summer, though an exact date has not been specified. In the meantime, here’s some more Overpass water physics, courtesy of Valve:
