Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne are getting next-gen remakes.
Remedy Entertainment has announced that its beloved Max Payne franchise is making a comeback, with new remakes of the first two games. The studio has partnered up with Rockstar Games to remake Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne for next-gen consoles and PC.
The announcement garnered enough excitement to crash Remedy’s investor website, so it’s safe to say that fans are excited to see the franchise spring back to life. Remedy’s CEO Tero Virtala said via a news release:
Max Payne has always held a special place in the hearts of everyone at Remedy, and we know the millions of fans worldwide feel the same. We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.
Remedy Entertainment will develop both Max Payne and Max Payne 2 remakes as a single title for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The remakes will be built using the studio’s Northlight game engine, which it also used to develop Control and Quantum Break. Rockstar Games is stepping in to finance the game’s development budget, bringing it up to scale with, “a typical Remedy AAA-game production,” which probably means that it will be more than a simple remaster for new consoles.
Max Payne and Max Payne 2 were developed by Remedy Entertainment, with the latter game published by Rockstar Games. Rockstar then took over to develop the third game in the series, Max Payne 3, on its own. At this point, pretty much all of Remedy’s most popular games are getting continuations in some form. Alan Wake 2 is in development as a horror-survival sequel. Control is getting both a sequel (Control 2) and spin-off multiplayer game (tentatively called Condor). A live-service online game called Vanguard is also in development at the studio.
