MPL Philippines Season 15 Week 5: Aurora suffer first loss, Team Liquid PH take over pole position

Week 5 of MPL Philippines Season 15 saw Aurora Gaming suffer their first loss of the Regular Season to ONIC Philippines.

Things are heating up in the Filipino Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports scene as Week 5 of the MLBB Professional League (MPL) Philippines finally saw Aurora Gaming suffer their first loss at the hands ofONIC Philippines. The M6 world champions defeated the Northern Lights in a 2-1 reverse sweep, avenging their earlier loss in Week 1 of the Regular Season.

With a sweep over TNC Pro Team to go with their victory against Aurora, ONIC Philippines climbed to third place in the standings and finished ahead of Team Falcons PH via game difference. The Gold Standard, Duane “Kelra” Pillas, grabbed both series MVP nods with his signature Granger and Harith picks. He showed why textbook marksman play was still the best in the metagame with his positioning and engage timing using those heroes.

Here are the MPL Philippines Season 15 Regular Season standings by the end of Week 5:

  1. Team Liquid PH (8-1) +11 Game difference (GF)
  2. Aurora Gaming (8-1) +10 GF
  3. ONIC Philippines (6-3) +6 GF
  4. Team Falcons PH (6-3) +5 GF
  5. TNC Pro Team (4-5) -1 GF
  6. AP.Bren (1-7) -9 GF
  7. Smart Omega (1-7) -10 GF
  8. Twisted Minds PH (1-8) -12 GF

Team Liquid PH and Aurora Gaming secured Playoff spots

Having secured an 8-1 record apiece through the first five weeks of the Regular Season, both Team Liquid PH and Aurora have secured a spot in the Playoffs for themselves.

The first and second-placed teams in the standings by the end of the Regular Season will have a first-round bye in the Playoffs, automatically securing themselves an upper bracket semifinals berth against the winner of the upper bracket quarterfinals bout between the third to sixth-placed teams in the Regular Season.

Aurora Gaming was the first to secure a Playoff spot after their victory over Twisted Minds PH in the opening series of Week 5 and AP.Bren's loss on the second day. However, Aurora's loss in their next series dashed their hopes of a perfect Regular Season run, thus giving the M6 world champions a chance to secure pole position in the league.

The race for sixth place starts now

Three teams, one slot; the race for sixth place in the Regular Season and the final spot in the Playoffs starts in Week 6. With three teams still struggling to find any points, one win can secure a Playoff spot for AP.Bren, Smart Omega, and Twisted Minds PH.

These three teams each have just one series win. However, one team will start with a disadvantage on Week 6. Twisted Minds PH already had a game disadvantage after losing both their series on Week 5, while Smart Omega and AP.Bren only played one series.

All three teams will play twice in Week 6, but AP.Bren has the toughest slate among them all, as they will play against the current first and second place teams: Team Liquid PH and Aurora. Meanwhile, Smart Omega will face TNC and Team Liquid PH while Twisted Minds PH will meet TNC and Team Falcons PH.

While on paper these three teams are projected to suffer another loss, a single win can boost them into the coveted sixth place in the standings. Despite a disadvantageous start, Twisted Minds PH look like they have the best chance to do it in Week 6.

The MPL Philippines Season 15 will continue with Week 6 on Friday (4 April). ONIC Philippines will face Team Falcons PH in the week's opening series. Aurora will only face Twisted Minds PH in Week 6, allowing Team Liquid PH to extend their lead against their closest opponent on the leaderboard.
