It was the first day of the ONE Esports MPL-Invitational 2023, with all 16 teams involved beginning their journey through the Group Stage with a string of best-of-one series over the course of today and tomorrow to decide which teams advance and who is eliminated early on. Today we saw a few teams take a commanding hold of their respective groups, while others struggled to really find their footing – and upsets definitely came into play too.

AP.Bren on top

AP.Bren, fresh off a stunning return to the top of MPL PH, got themselves of to a strong start at MPL-I, with two Day 1 victories. The team swiftly dismantled both DEWA Esports United and TheOhioBrothers, leaving only Nova Esports as their final challenger for Day 2. While DEWA secured a commanding victory over Nova, their fate remains to be seen tomorrow.

Blacklist’s blunder

HomeBois has been looking as though they are one of the strongest teams in MLBB this season, and their victory at MPL MY Season 12 confirmed it. The team continued to grow with wins over Geek Fam ID and Blacklist International today, leading them to the top of the group. Blacklist now need to fight even harder to prove that they are still a force to be reckoned with when they face GFID on Day 2, while Team Falcons have some struggles of their own.

Robots alive

Group C was a mixed bag of results on Day 1, with only EVOS Legends really not coming out looking great at all. Bigetron Alpha surprised us all with a win over the M4 Champions, ECHO, while Rebellion Zion won over the White Tigers but lost to the Orcas. It’s going to be interesting to see just who comes out on top of this group, with a lot to play for on Day 2.

SYS start strong

SeeYouSoon, the Cambodian representative at MPL-I – and heading to the M5 World Championship too, got off to a fantastic start today, taking down Team Flash in their best-of-one match. However, the team then fell to PH’s Kingslayers, RSG PH, who secured two wins for the day. Heading into Day 2, Rex Regum Qeon will need to bring up their game if they want to reach the playoffs.

With that, Day 1’s standings can be seen above, with a few teams already set for a flawless Group Stage run. However, tomorrow also comes with eliminations, which will see a total of eight teams eliminated by the end of the day.
