G2 will face Top Esports in the semifinals on Saturday (6 July).
In an epic showdown of the best Western teams at the League of Legends Esports World Cup Quarterfinals, G2 Esports came out victorious after outplaying FlyQuest 2-1 on Friday (5 July) to be the last team to make it to the semifinals.
G2 Esports, the undisputed kings of Europe, entered the competition as the heavy favourites, backed by their past tournament successes.
Meanwhile, FlyQuest aimed to replicate Team Liquid’s achievement at the EWC Quarterfinals and proudly raise the North American flag in this tournament.
In the first game, FlyQuest quickly took control of the early game, taking map objectives and winning skirmishes and team fights.
However, the European team fought back, winning the team fight at the Baron pit and opening up Fly Quest’s base early on.
After some scrappy plays and chaotic calls, control quickly slipped away from G2’s hands, allowing the North American team to retake the lead and dominate the rest of the game.
And after a 38-minute encounter, FlyQuest finished off G2 in a clean ace, allowing them to march down the mid lane to destroy G2’s Nexus and take the first game.
In the second game, both teams were on equal footing until the mid game, where G2 pushed forward their advantage in a team fight in the mid lane. G2 continued to find wins in the side lanes and skirmishes, eventually increasing their gold lead. And after a 36-minute encounter, G2 destroyed FlyQuest's Nexus to win the second game.
In the third game, both teams were on equal footing in the laning phase, with FlyQuest finding a slight advantage by taking a few more kills than G2. FlyQuest continued to build on this advantage, harassing members of G2 in the side lanes and taking neutral objectives.
However, G2 continued to fight back and found an opportunity to turn things around in a team fight at the Draogn pit to overtake FlyQuest in terms of gold, clean them up in the river, which gave G2 the way to finish off the Baron.
After a 30-minute encounter, G2 marched down FlyQuest's base to destroy the Nexus and win the third game and the series.
G2 will face Top Esports at the semifinals on Saturday (6 July).
Meanwhile, FlyQuest bowed out of the competition in 5th-8th place, with their EWC key crushed.
