The LEC has been dominated by G2 Esports this season.
G2 Esports has ended their regular season the best way possible by winning the LEC Summer Split title after defeating Excel Esports in a highly-anticipated rematch. That makes it two out of three regular season titles for G2, which brings their grand tally to 11 LEC titles, the most of any organisation in the region.
With that win, G2 walks away with 40,000 euros, which is half the total prize pool of the LEC Summer Split. They also accrued 180 championship points that solidified the team's position as the number one seed in the LEC.
However, their road to Worlds 2023 has only just begun with the LEC Season Finals set to take place from 19 August to 10 September. Because of their consistent performances over the course of the season, G2 will be in the number one seed and will face the third seed, Team BDS.
Spring Split champions MAD Lions managed enough championship points to nab the second seed where they will go up against the fourth seed, Excel Esports. Waiting for the losers of the two series will be Fnatic and SK Gaming with both teams managing to scrap just enough points over the last three splits to qualify.
Only the top three teams will make it to Worlds 2023 while the fourth-placed team will compete in a best-of-five against the fourth-seed from the LCS for one final slot at the annual world championship. With the likes of G2 being head and shoulders above everyone else, it will be interesting to see the other three teams that will be making it through.
This will be the first time G2 and BDS face-off against one another in a best-of-five series. And ever since BDS' introduction into the LEC last season, they've only ever beaten G2 once and that was in a best-of-one. And while BDS have performed much better than last season, it's hard to see them go past G2 in a best-of-five.
As for MAD and XL, both teams have a storied history with one another, which dates back to 2020. However, this will also be the first-ever best-of-five series to feature both teams. In their most recent encounter, XL got the better of MAD during the LEC Summer Split group stage with a 2-0 victory. Whether or not MAD has a plan against the most improved team in the LEC remains to be seen.
G2 Esports will play Team BDS on 20 August while MAD Lions and Excel Esports' series will happen on 21 August. Be sure to catch all the action on the official LEC Twitch channel.
