A troubled child
Kerrigan's mother was killed and her father disabled when she was very young... by her. She had accidentally unleashed her psionic powers on them and was quickly taken by the Terran Confederacy. In their 'care' she was tortured both psychologically and physically in an attempt to brainwash her into a loyal assassin. In a struggle for her own mind, she refused to display her powers even when the life of her own father was on the line. Seeing no other option, the Confederacy implanted her with a neuro-inhibitor, a device that would force her loyalty, at the cost of weakening her psionic abilities.
Ghost reporting
During her unwilling service for the Terran Confederacy, Kerrigan committed numerous hits against the enemies of the state. The most prominent one was against a senator from Korhal who claimed the planet to be independent, Angus Mengsk. Her and two other ghosts tracked him down and decapitated him, taking the head with them. This unsurprisingly upset his son, Arcturus Mengsk, who spared no expense to track her down. He eventually found her in a Confederate laboratory, the last surviving subject of their experiments. She was brought aboard the Hyperion and her neuro-inhibitor was removed. Her will was her own once again, and after much convincing she joined the Sons of Korhal to exact her vengeance on the Confederacy.
Never know what hit 'em
Under flag of the Sons of Korhal, Kerrigan became a horror story for confederate soldiers. Kerrigan took part in some of the riskiest, most suicidal operations of the rebellion. During an attack on a ghost academy on Tarsonis, Kerrigan found the man who had tortured her as a girl. After she claimed her messy revenge, she brought Mengsk one of her comrades who had helped kill his father. After Mengsk killed him, Kerrigan became wary of him, fearing that his rage would make her a target. Mengsk assuaged her fears, however, stating that he'd forgiven her. Fully trusting him now, Kerrigan truly believed in his cause.
Well color me happy
Kerrigan was shortly afterwards sent to Antiga Prime to undermine Confederate operations there. She met with Captain Jim Raynor and his troops. After initially reading his mind, she was disgusted by what he thought of her, but over time they grew close and eventually struck up a romance. During their attempts to sabotage the Confederacy on Antiga Prime, Mengsk ordered Kerrigan to plant a psi-emitter in the middle of a Confederate base. This device would send out a signal, attracting Zerg forces to its location. Reluctantly, Kerrigan did as she was told, but voiced her concern of such a barbaric tactic. Mengsk brushed her off, saying that he would do anything to protect humanity. Raynor and Kerrigan grew uneasy after this, fearing that their leader might not be as stable as they thought.
Belay that order, we're moving out
Ten days later, Mengsk had set his sights on Tarsonis, the capital world of the Confederacy. To the disgust of Kerrigan and Raynor, Mengsk's troops began deploying psi-emitters. Billions of Zerg were lured to Tarsonis City followed shortly by a Protoss force, intent on glassing the Zerg hives. Mengsk ordered Kerrigan to defend the Zerg against the Protoss, allowing them to completely destroy the Confederate on Tarsonis. Having completed her task, Kerrigan requested evacuation. After years of secretly wishing revenge for his father, Mengsk denied her request, leaving her to die at New Gettysburg.
Arise, my daughter
Mengsk's treachery did not spell the end of Kerrigan. She was captured by the Zerg and turned in the Queen of Blades. After being set loose by the Overmind, she raided a Terran ghost academy in an attempt to unlock her long controlled psionic powers. She grew rapidly in strength afterwards, becoming able to sense Protoss and conjure psionic storms. Kerrigan's reckless behavior led to the leaders of the Zerg swarm distrusting her, and several of them dying. After the death of the first Overmind, Kerrigan came under the control of around half of the Zerg swarm.
I do not join, I lead
Some of the remaining Zerg leaders on Char merged together to create a new Overmind, and a large force from Earth arrived to take control of it and conquer the Koprulu sector. Kerrigan, with an unlikely alliance between the Terran and Protoss, defeated the Earth forces and destroyed the new Overmind. This only served to make Kerrigan even stronger, as she now had full control over the entire Zerg swarm. Then, she vanished.
Billions dead because of me
Four years later, the Zerg returned with Kerrigan at the lead. They swept through the system, ravaging planets and leveling entire cities. Her goal was an ancient artifact from the long dead Xel'naga race. She was unable to gather the pieces, because Jim Raynor beat her to them. In a final stand against the Zerg, Dominion and Raynor's forces attacked Char and used the artifact on Kerrigan returning her to a mostly human state.
I AM THE SWARM
After escaping from the research facility she was detained in after her humanization, Kerrigan immediately sought out the Zerg. She quickly regained control over her old forces and began to prepare for an attack on Mengsk. Realizing that she needed more power than her Terran form could offer, she visited the birth planet of the Zerg and morphed herself into the Queen of Blades once more in an evolution pit. With the might of the Zerg and the most powerful psionics in the sector, Kerrigan took control of his capitol. Face to face with the man that betrayed her, Kerrigan overloaded his body with psionic energy, causing him to explode.
Kerrigan is one of the most powerful beings in the universe. With the Zerg under her command, her mastery of psionics, and her powerful allies, she is truly a force to be reckoned with. Her story is not quite over, however and there is surely more to come in Legacy of the Void. But as it stands, the ruthless and cunning leader of the Swarm has obtained her free will and her revenge.
