Ben Brode on Warsong nerf: "We tried 30 or 40 different versions"

The senior game designer addresses the recent change to [card]Warsong Commander[/card] that’s about to kill Patron Warrior when the patch lands.

For months, the OTK nature of Patron Warrior had the Hearthstone metagame in stranglehold. Capable of dealing massive amounts of damage out of nowhere – sometimes upwards of 70 – while at the same time punishing its opponent for playing minions, the combo deck grew to be hated by many for its uninteractive playstyle.

Just earlier this week, good news for the opposition of Patron Warrior arrived: Warsong Commander, the deck’s primary charge engine and OTK enabler, was getting the axe, its effect reduced to the puny “Your Charge minions have +1 attack”. Patron Warrior is going to be no more.

To address the change, as well as community feedback that the nerf might’ve been a bit too much, senior game design Ben Brode made a short vlog on why Warsong Commander was nerfed this way.
