Things you might not know:
- Lisandro's mother taught him poker at the age of 5. By the age of 8 or 9, he felt he was playing better than any of his relatives in the regular home games they hosted.
- By the time Lisandro turned eighteen, the legal limit for gambling in Australia, he was making more money playing poker than he was from working a “regular” job.
- Lisandro was a successful real estate investor before committing to being a full time poker pro.
- Lisandro's established poker nickname is "The Iceman," falsely assumed to be from his cold and calculating disposition at the tables but actually from his habit of regularly chewing "ICE" gum.
- Lisandro has often employed chewing gum at the poker table to reduce facial tells.
- Lisandro didn't play live tournaments for 7 or 8 years when after winning 7 European tournaments in 1994, the prizes were a significant addition to his bankroll for the travel and time. In 2003-4, when the prize pools started to improve, he started playing tournaments again.
- Lisandro made his first final table appearance in a World Series of Poker event in 1997, in the $3,000 pot limit hold'em event won by Phil Hellmuth.
- In December 2004, Lisandro won the $25,000 limit hold'em heads-up tournament, defeating Howard Lederer in the final to take home the $194,000 grand prize.
- In May 2005, Lisandro won the $10,000 no limit hold'em World Series of Poker circuit event at Lake Tahoe, defeating Phil Ivey in the final heads-up confrontation to win the $542,360 prize. Lisandro has said that he considers this to be one of his greatest achievements, as he rates Ivey to be one of the best players in the world.
- Lisandro claimed in 2007 that he had made a million dollars from poker in nine consecutive years.
- Lisandro once lost a million in the Big Game in three weeks, and it took him four weeks to win his money back. He proceeded to win another couple million after than and then proceeded it wasn't worth the risk and started playing smaller games.
- Lisandro won his first World Series of Poker bracelet in 2007 in the $2,000 Seven-Card Stud event beating a final table that included Daniel Negreanu and Nick Frangos.
- Lisandro placed 2nd in the World Championship Pot Limit Hold'em (Event 13) in 2007. He won $294,620 as the runner-up to Allen Cunningham.
- Lisandro won the WSOP Player of the Year award in 2009.
- Lisandro joined Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Ted Forrest, and Puggy Pearson as the only players in history to win three gold bracelets in one year.
- Lisandro feels he is good in all the poker games, preferring any game to no limit hold'em. He prefers higher buy-in events and the ability to play different games.
- Lisandro is known for his edginess at the table having had infamous confrontations with Prahlad Friedman and others.
- Lisandro's most recent win was in September 2010 where hw won the WSOP Europe PLO event for $259k.
- Lisandro finished in 11th at the $50k Poker Players Championship at the WSOP for $143k.
- Lisandro owns homes in Las Vegas, Nevada, Santa Barbara, California, and Australia in addition to his Italian residence.
When asked about his feelings after winning his first WSOP bracelet in 2007, he said:
“I’m trying to calm down actually. I’m just feeling a little bit elevated. I’m flying. (Laughs.) For me it’s just the bracelet. The money’s worth nothing. It was just the bracelet!”
When asked what he is continuing to learn in tournaments after his WSOP wins:"I go through all the five games, I am going to be playing Limit Hold´em. The whole field knows how to play Limit Hold´em. So, I am going to adjust my strategy marginally. I am not going to waste chips in that game. If it was a cash game and there was a value bet, I might get involved. But in a tournament I am going to save those chips. I want to use them for one of the other games where I have a massive edge (such as Stud, Eight-or-Better, and Razz). In Limit Hold´em I am playing with people who all know the game as good as me. So, I fold the marginal situations to conserve chips for the game where I have a bigger advantage. It is something I am perfecting. You only have so many bullets. You have to pick your best spot to fire."
When asked why he wears his trademark fedora:"The hat makes me feel better. It helps me to get into the zone. When I put that hat on, it´s all concentration. It´s business. It´s war. It´s time to go to work. When I take the hat off, it´s time to relax."
