Viktor "Isildur1" Blom defeated Dan "jungleman12" Cates in the third Superstar Showdowns on PokerStars on Sunday. These two 20 year-old heads-up specialists played quickly and aggressively for five hours, without breaks during the four table 2500 hand match that Isildur1 won by $51,196.Isildur1 moves to 2-1 so far in these challenges, having lost $41,700 in the first showdown to Isaac "philivey2694" Haxton, and having beaten Tony. G for around $44,000.
There were many swings in the match which was essentially even at the half way mark of 1250 hands. Daniel Cates, who plays as “w00ki3z” on Pokerstars, had leads of his own, but couldn't gain momentum in the latter parts of the match.
Each player won big pots with lucky river plays, but Blom seemed to gain more value on the river with his patented overbetting technique.
There was a lot of excitement for this match because Dan "jungleman12" Cates was the biggest winner in 2010 with winnings around $5.5 million according to some reports and already off to a quick start in 2011 with $750k in winnings from online cash games. Both players played aggressive both pre-flop and post flop.
Speculation now will mount on who will be Blom's next opponent and if he can maintain this momentum to start winning consistently in the cash games on Pokerstars.
