Game of Thrones War for Westeros is an RTS that lets players rewrite the main story

Ever wanted to rewrite Game of Thrones? Now’s your chance.

HBO’s Game of Thrones had a polarising ending–that much is fair to say. During this week’s Summer Game Fest 2025 showcase, developer PlaySide offered a solution: what if you could rewrite the series’ ending in video game form? Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a real-time strategy game that enables players to do exactly that, by commanding the Great Houses and attempting to claim the Iron Throne for themselves.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros real-time strategy game revealed

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros presents itself as an alternate take on HBO’s Game of Thrones series, with key events–like Jon Snow’s fight with the Night King–being altered significantly in its reveal trailer. We see things in this trailer that never happened in the final moments of the series, like Jaime Lannister joining the fight, and Daenerys Targaryen riding into battle on her dragon.

Here’s how PlaySide describes the game:

Classic real-time strategy in the world of Westeros. Conquer the Seven Kingdoms solo, or in treacherous free-for-all multiplayer. Command the Great Houses, rally iconic heroes, and rewrite the fate of the realm. Do you have the strength to seize the Iron Throne?

The real-time strategy game will allow players to lead the armies of House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or, most crucially, the Night King in free-for-all large-scale battles. Players will be able to forge alliances, lie to their rivals, and deploy heroes, armies, and various mechanics to win the war.

The game will feature multiple locations from the TV series, and can be played either solo or with friends. Game of Thrones: War for Westeros launches in 2026.
