Steam indie horror hit Mouthwashing coming to consoles this year

The game will sell digital and physical copies on console.

If you’re a fan of the horror genre, you’ve likely heard of a deeply disturbing, and yet critically acclaimed title that became an unexpected hit in 2024: Mouthwashing. Game developer Wrong Organ recently revealed in an announcement on its Steam news page that the game has sold over 500,000 copies, and will launch on consoles, including PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, later this year.

“Everyone, you truly are incredible and we’re extremely grateful to you for taking a part in this painful journey and on behalf of everyone here both at Wrong Organ and CR Channel we want to say thank you,” the announcement read.

According to the announcement, the console versions will get a physical release “so you can have Curly’s unblinking eye staring at you from its cover at all times,” according to the devs. On top of this, Mouthwashing merch from Fangamer will also be sold. According to Wrong Organ’s announcement, the merch will include apparel, plushies, vinyl, and more.

This psychological horror hit debuted on Steam in September 2024 for under $15, delivering a chilling and disturbing experience set aboard a stranded space freighter. Despite its low-poly visuals, the game effectively explores themes of suicide and cannibalism as the doomed crew turns on each other, descending into madness before meeting their end.

More narrative than gameplay-driven, Mouthwashing's story is known to linger with an unsettling weight long after the credits roll. Rather than relying on jump scares, it slowly unravels the player's sense of morality, leaving them with that sick-to-the-stomach feeling that defines the best psychological horror experiences.

Mouthwashing has maintained an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam and earned multiple accolades, including Best Narrative and Player’s Choice at the 2024 Horror Game Awards. It also won Chumley’s Speakeasy Best Hidden Gem at the New York Game Awards and received several honourable mentions for excellence in narrative and audio, along with a nomination for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival.
