PlayStation Portal introduces Cloud Streaming Beta with over 120 games, no PS5 required

This update makes the device more than just a remote screen limited to your own home.

A new PlayStation Portal update has rolled out on Wednesday (20 November), and it includes a feature allowing PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers to access over 120 games, even without a PlayStation 5.

The feature, called Cloud Streaming, will be available in select countries across the world. Namely, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.

What is Cloud Streaming?

Cloud Streaming (Beta) is an experimental feature available to PS Plus Premium members in select regions. It will give them access to over 120 games, including games like Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and more.

You may also use PlayStation Plus Cloud storage to save your game on your mobile device and pick up exactly where you left off on your PS5. DualSense capabilities will also be accessible through Cloud Streaming, including Adaptive triggers, speakers, haptic feedback, and the PlayStation Portal's on-screen touchpad.

Essentially, Cloud Streaming beta allows the PlayStation Portal to function like an independent handheld device, or a makeshift budget version of the PS5. However, since the service is still in beta, some features are yet to be made available, like game trials, streaming for purchased PlayStation Store titles, party voice chat, game invites for some games, the create button, 3D audio, and in-game commerce.

Players can only access PS5 games at this time, since PS3 and PS4 games are currently not supported.

How do I access Cloud Streaming?

Accessing Cloud Streaming requires players to have a few things on hand first: a PlayStation Portal remote player, an account on the PlayStation Network, a current PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, and a reliable Wi-Fi connection. A download and upload speed of at least 5 Mbps is also necessary for cloud streaming, but you'd need 7 Mbps to stream at 720p and at least 13 Mbps to stream at 1080p.

If you have all of the above, you must update your PS Portal for the latest system firmware. Once updated, you can enable Cloud Streaming through Settings, which can be found when you open “Quick Menu.”
