If you’ve ever wondered what Minecraft would look like in live-action, we have some bad news for you.

Warner Bros. Pictures has dropped the reveal trailer for its upcoming live-action Minecraft movie, and it looks utterly abominable. Titled ‘A Minecraft Movie’, the adaptation stars Jason Momoa as Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison and Jack Black as Steve, the latter of which is one of Minecraft’s playable protagonists.

The trailer also features boxy sheep, Creepers, and Piglins stomping about the world of Minecraft, which is brought to life with some… interesting CG work. Watch the trailer below:

First Minecraft live-action movie trailer shows off familiar in-game sights

Whether you like it or not, you’re getting a live-action movie adaptation of the hit sandbox game Minecraft from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. The movie stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black in an ensemble cast that also includes Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Kate McKinnon (Barbie), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus), Emma Myers (Wednesday) and Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker).

Titled A Minecraft Movie, the adaptation’s official synopsis reads:

Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits - Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) - find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

It looks like Jack Black will star in the movie as Steve, playing a mentoring role to the rest of the cast as they craft their way to survival in the world of Minecraft. Much like the movie’s visual effects, its costuming looks pretty… interesting! While Minecraft creatures like Piglins retain their cuboidal forms from the game, the rest of this movie’s cast appears to be draped in the most randomly colourful assortment of clothes one can imagine.

A Minecraft Movie is set to hit theatres on April 4, 2025. Netflix is also making an animated TV adaptation of Minecraft.
