EA may have pulled the plug on Black Panther, but its Marvel plans are far from over: at least three titles still officially on the table.
Electronic Arts has officially cancelled its Black Panther game and shut down Cliffhanger Games, the studio behind it, but Marvel fans still have some good things to look forward to. Both EA and Marvel have confirmed that the multi-game partnership is still moving ahead, beginning with the in-progress Iron Man game, and that means that EA is committed to developing at least three other Marvel titles.
EA still committed to Marvel partnership despite Black Panther cancellation
“Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues,” EA Entertainment president Laura Miele said in a statement after Black Panther's cancelation. And according to a report by IGN, Marvel Games echoed the sentiment, saying that the partnership remains strong, and describing the deal as “a creative collaboration focused on original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters.” On top of this, the same Marvel spokesperson confirmed that the ongoing deal still includes three titles, including Iron Man.
The original deal, signed in 2023, outlined plans for three games. An Iron Man game is still in the works, with Motive Studio currently leading the development of the said title, while Black Panther was in the works at Cliffhanger before the studio's closure. With that project now cancelled, it’s possible that another Marvel title could take its place in the future.
The reassurances come as EA shifts its broader approach to licensed IP. In a 2024 statement, CEO Andrew Wilson said the company would be moving “away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry.” Despite that pivot, Marvel games remain part of EA’s roadmap.
Originally unveiled in 2023, EA’s Black Panther game was in development at Cliffhanger Games, a Seattle-based studio founded that same year and led by Kevin Stephens, best known for his work on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The title was planned as a single-player, open-world action-adventure experience, though few official details had been released before its cancellation.
Black Panther is EA’s third cancelled project in 2025, following two other unannounced incubation titles. The shutdown comes as part of wider company restructuring, which has included hundreds of layoffs across 2023 through 2025. Despite the cuts, EA continues to invest in key franchises like Battlefield, and earlier this year, the company implemented a mandatory return-to-office policy.
