Black Myth: Wukong is a rousing success, selling 10 million units in record-breaking time.

Developer Game Science’s action-RPG Black Myth: Wukong has officially become one of the fastest-selling videogames of all time. Game Science shared the news on Twitter/X, confirming that the game had sold a whopping 10 million units in just three days.

Black Myth: Wukong has now blown past Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy in sales, breaking numerous records in its release week.

Black Myth: Wukong hits 10 million sales in release week

Game Science announced on Twitter/X that Black Myth: Wukong has sold 10 million units worldwide as of August 23, three days after its launch. The game also had three million concurrent players across all platforms at the time. Just two days earlier, the game had already surpassed games like Palworld and Counter-Strike 2 to hit 2.13 million concurrent players on Steam alone.

Games industry Daniel Ahmad confirmed on Twitter/X that the game has managed to surpass Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy in sales within the same timeframe. Elden Ring hit 12 million sales three weeks after launch, while Hogwarts Legacy shipped 12 million units two weeks after launch. For comparison, Baldur’s Gate 3 also took five months to ship over 20 million units while Cyberpunk 2077 shipped 13.7 million units in one month.

All of these games sold a ridiculous number of copies in a short amount of time, which only goes to show how impressive Black Myth: Wukong’s sales numbers are by comparison. A lot of this comes down to how well the game performed in China. According to Ahmad, the game’s strong performance in China can be attributed to the country being able to use the international version of Steam without a VPN. Over 93% of the game’s 250,000 reviews on Steam were written in Simplified Chinese, and 97% of those reviews were positive.

Additionally, a limited-time deal running on the PlayStation 5 in China led to a surge in sales for the console. The console is now selling twice as quickly as the PlayStation 4 in China, and has become “an established platform alongside the Nintendo Switch.” This, alongside Black Myth: Wukong’s immense success, suggests that the Chinese gaming market is growing in historic new ways.
