Mafia developer Hangar 13 has revealed its next entry in the action-adventure crime franchise Mafia. During this week’s Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, Hangar 13 announced Mafia: The Old Country, a prequel that will take the franchise all the way back to 1900s Sicily.

Mafia: The Old Country takes the franchise back to its roots
Mafia developer Hangar 13 is officially working on a new Mafia game, following the 2020 remake Mafia: Definitive Edition. Where Mafia 3 moved the franchise timeline forward by being set in the 1960s, its sequel Mafia: The Old Country will move the timeline to its earliest point yet: the 1900s. Players will presumably play as an all-new cast of characters, seeing as each Mafia game typically features standalone stories and characters.
Hangar 13's most recent entries in the franchise, Mafia 3 and Mafia: Definitive Edition, both incorporated open-world elements into gameplay. Thus, it's safe to assume that The Old Country will be an open-world game too. Here’s how 2K describes the game:
Uncover the origins of organised crime with a gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily. Fight to survive in this dangerous and unforgiving era, with action brought to life by the authentic realism and rich storytelling that the critically acclaimed Mafia series is known for.
Hangar 13 will reveal more information on the game this December, potentially during The Game Awards 2024. Mafia: The Old Country will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2025.
