Poker-inspired roguelike Balatro sets its first major update for 2025
Solo developer LocalThunk’s deck building roguelike game Balatro has enjoyed an unexpected level of success since its launch in February this year, becoming publisher Playstack’s fastest-selling game within a mere eight hours of its release. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be too surprising that more content for the game is already in the works.
This week, LocalThunk revealed that Balatro is getting its first major gameplay update sometime in 2025. Although the developer hasn’t given much away regarding the update’s contents, Playstack has confirmed that it will “bring new ideas and strategies to the game” across all available platforms, and it won’t be a paid expansion or DLC. The update will be completely free.
Playstack and LocalThunk revealed the news as the first of three announcements related to Balatro coming “this summer.” One of these announcements might be tied to long-awaited news regarding Balatro’s upcoming mobile ports, which have not been given a set release date yet. The duo also announced that Balatro has passed two million copies sold, after selling one million in its first month of release alone.
Balatro is a poker-inspired roguelike deck building game that has players combine valid poker hands with unique Joker cards to create different builds. Players have to win a group of three poker rounds by playing high-scoring hands and collecting chips. However, they can also improve their deck by using different items that change the game’s rules, adding an element of strategy to the game.
