Breaking down Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns’ new content
NetherRealm has officially unveiled Khaos Reigns, an upcoming expansion that brings lots of new content to Mortal Kombat 1’s second year of service. The expansion functions much like Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath expansion, offering a new story epilogue to tie up loose ends from the main campaign, a new type of finishing move, and more playable characters.
The big ticket item here, as always, is the new roster additions. The following are Khaos Reigns’ new fighters:
- Cyrax
- Sektor
- Noob Saibot
- The T-1000 Terminator from Terminator 2: Judgment Day
- Ghostface from the Scream franchise
- Conan the Barbarian
Cyrax, Noob Saibot and Sektor will be immediately playable when Khaos Reigns launches, but the three remaining crossover characters will be released separately. With the addition of Cyrax and Sektor, Mortal Kombat 1 has also become the first game since Mortal Kombat 9 to feature all of the franchise’s ninja characters in the playable roster. Both Cyrax and Sektor are also in-game Kameo fighters.
Robert Patrick is confirmed to return as the T-1000 from Terminator 2, while Roger L. Jackson returns to voice Ghostface from the movie franchise. While Arnold Schwarzenegger’s likeness was used for Conan the Barbarian, it is currently unknown if the actor is returning to voice Conan for this expansion.
Mortal Kombat 3’s Animalities are also returning in Khaos Reigns. These finishing moves are similar to fatalities and involve fighters turning into animals to annihilate their enemies as grotesquely as possible. In the video, we see Mileena transform into a praying mantis to chomp down on her victim’s head before tearing them in two.
Khaos Reigns will follow up on the ending of the main story, with an alternate timeline version of Havik causing trouble for NetherRealm’s heroes. We’ll also get a new origin story for Noob Saibot, whom the trailer confirms to be a resurrected Bi-Han, AKA Sub-Zero.
Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns launches on September 24, 2024.
