The final entry of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy might not be that far off.
Square Enix seems confident in completing the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy by 2027. According to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s recently-released companion book, the main story for its sequel has already been completed with voice recording set to begin, “shortly.” The book also mentions that Square Enix hopes to complete the game within three years, which would give it a release window of 2027 - shorter than the four years it took for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to come out.
Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy might be finished by 2027
Twitter/X user Aitaikimochi posted a few interesting tidbits from the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Ultimania book, which acts as a guidebook with some additional lore on the game. The book reportedly mentions that the third and final part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is not only deep in development but has a complete main story written out too. Co-game director Tetsuya Nomura states in the book that the team will, “perhaps start voice recording in the near future.”
It sounds like Square Enix is already hard at work at completing the remake project, and fans might not have to wait that long to see how it all wraps up. While it sounds like the developer is still sorting some things out - producer Yoshinori Kitase reportedly has an idea about, “something very important to include,” that wasn’t in the original game, and Nomura wants to make it happen - it’s still on track to arrive faster than Rebirth.
Kitase notes in the book that Rebirth had an efficient period of development due to Square Enix retaining the same staff as the previous instalment, which will happen again for the currently untitled Part 3. While it took four years for Rebirth to come out, the game actually only took three years to make. One of those years was spent developing Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Intermission DLC.
According to the book, Kitase hopes to stick to the same three-year schedule for Part 3 as well. The game would then fall into a tentative release window of 2027, which lines up with the 30-year anniversary of Final Fantasy 7’s original 1997 release date. Square Enix will surely make full use of that fact in the finale’s marketing, should it actually make that date. Things can always change during development, however, especially if the company changes its mind and decides to give Rebirth an Intermission-like DLC expansion.
