A whole new Silent Hill game is now playable on PlayStation 5 for free.
After a lengthy gap in marketing, Konami has finally dropped a new glimpse at its upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2. During Sony's State of Play showcase, Konami showed off the survival horror game's revamped combat, spooky enemies and repainted environments. As if that wasn't enough, the publisher also released an entirely new free-to-play Silent Hill game called The Short Message today.
Here's the Silent Hill 2 combat trailer:
Silent Hill 2 gets the Resident Evil 2 remake treatment
The Silent Hill 2 remake is in development at Bloober Team, the developer behind Layers of Fear and The Medium. Konami first announced the project back in 2022 with a story trailer that boasted impressive visuals, only to go completely silent on its progress in the years since. The original game is a survival horror classic, so fans have been rightfully apprehensive of the remake doing it any justice.
This time, however, Konami finally had something new to show us. The publisher dropped a combat trailer for the remake, showcasing Bloober Team's redone combat gameplay. The video also shows us a few recogniseable locations from the town of Silent Hill, where James solves puzzles and pokes through old houses while searching for his late wife Mary. Much like the original, there’s a thick fog constantly hovering over the town - ominously beckoning James forward to unveil its secrets.
After the trailer flips through a few locations from the old game, it dives into combat. People tend to remember Silent Hill 2 for its suspenseful atmosphere, gruesome creature designs and psychological horror - but it had plenty of shooting and bash-em-up combat too. All of that returns here, as James dons a baseball bat, shotgun and pistol to fend off the monsters of Silent Hill. It also looks like you’ll have to mash ‘X’ to escape when monsters get too close and grab James, which hopefully won’t happen as often as I think it will.
Silent Hill 2 does not have a release window yet, suggesting that the game won’t be launching this year. However, Konami did release another Silent Hill game today out of nowhere to keep fans happy - Silent Hill: The Short Message. This free-to-play game is already available on the PlayStation 5, and follows a teenage girl who explores an abandoned apartment complex after receiving texts from her late friend.
