Following a steep revenue drop, Destiny 2 has delayed its highly-anticipated expansion The Final Shape to Summer 2024.
Bungie has announced that its highly-anticipated Destiny 2 expansion The Final Shape will not meet its release date of February 27, 2024. The expansion will now launch on June 4, 2024, as Bungie pads out the missing months of content with returning events and a two-month content drop called Into the Light.
This follows a sharp drop in revenue projections of 45% for Destiny 2 this year, causing Bungie to lay off 90-100 of its employees to cut costs.
Why did Destiny 2: The Final Shape get delayed?
Destiny 2’s upcoming The Final Shape expansion promises to end the ongoing plot that has defined the multiplayer shooter to date while setting the stage for the next era of its story. With so much riding on its success, the expansion has built up a lot of anticipation from a player base keen on seeing how this story (somewhat) ends. Unfortunately, The Final Shape is getting quite a significant four-month delay to Summer 2024, which is big for a multiplayer game that relies on a steady cycle of new content to keep players happy.
In a video published to Destiny 2’s YouTube channel, Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn attributed the delay to Bungie needing more time for it, “to become exactly what we want it to be.” He also elaborated on how Bungie plans to keep players busy in the months leading up to the expansion:
Here’s how Destiny 2 will make up for The Final Shape’s delay: first, the upcoming dungeon Warlord’s Ruin launches on December 1 before some Crucible updates to sort out PvP gameplay. Season of the Wish starts this week and ends in February 2024, at which point a weekly story event called Wishes will kick off. The Guardian Games holiday event will also make a comeback in March, bulking up that expansion-less gap in Destiny 2’s content schedule.
Bungie will presumably stay mum on the Final Shape until April next year, at which point the company plans to reveal new enemies, three new Supers and a new location within the Traveler, among other new stuff contained in the expansion. In the same month, a two-month-long event called Into the Light will kick off with a bunch of rewards before Bungie drops a Destiny 2 map pack in May.
Finally, The Final Shape will launch in June. The Final Shape will take place in a space within the Traveler called the Pale Heart, opened up by the Witness. Here, the long-dead Cayde-6 returns with Nathan Fillion reprising his role, as the ‘Light and Darkness Saga’ of Destiny 2 comes to an end. Will all this content be enough to sate player appetites until the expansion arrives? We’ll have to wait (seven months) and see.
