Following this year’s disappointing Call of Duty entry, next year will see a return to the Black Ops franchise.
2024’s Call of Duty game will reportedly be a new entry in the Black Ops franchise. Windows Central reports that the successor to this year’s Modern Warfare 3 will pivot back towards the Black Ops series with studio Treyarch in charge of development, and a campaign set during the Gulf War in the 1990s.
Treyarch will have had four years to develop the next Black Ops game by the time it’s released, so players can hopefully look forward to a more fleshed-out experience than Modern Warfare 3.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War
Call of Duty: Black Ops’ 2024 sequel will reportedly have a heavy focus on the CIA much like Black Ops Cold War, though it’s unclear if the cast of Cold War will return. The game will be set in the Gulf War, an armed conflict that took place between Iraq and a 42-country coalition from 1990 to 1991. Its campaign will specifically focus on the United States’ role in the conflict, likely using the CIA as protagonist.
The core Zombies mode will return with a round-based format, pivoting away from this year’s open world version of the mode. Remastered maps from previous Black Ops games are also said to return, though Activision might dole these out in future updates rather than have them available at launch. Windows Central suggests that the 2024 game could follow Black Ops Cold War’s naming convention, and be called Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War in full.
Call of Duty and absurd titles basically go hand in hand at this point, so that wouldn’t be a surprise. Seeing as the Black Ops games tend to follow characters operating in shadows to influence the outcome of brewing conflicts, Call of Duty 2024 will likely follow the United States attempting to defeat Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq via less than legitimate means. Windows Central states that the game will, “attempt to explore a nuanced narrative of the Gulf War, with a critical focus on different participants within the conflict.”
As a result of its setting, you can expect 2024’s Call of Duty to return to military equipment of old, forgoing the modern weapons and gadgets players have access to in the Modern Warfare franchise. Seeing as the Gulf War also involved tank-based warfare, a focus on vehicular combat is a possibility. On the multiplayer side of things, the outlet specifically singled out classic Black Ops maps like Grind and WMD to return for this new entry.
