Baldur's Gate 3 takes up 122GB of storage space but there's no preload

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a very big game, and it might take you all day to download if you’re not careful.

The highly-anticipated fantasy RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally coming out on PC this week, but you’re going to need to clear out some storage space if you’re planning to download it. The game launches tomorrow, August 3 and takes up a whopping 122GB of storage, so if you’re planning to take the day off to play it, maybe consider the amount of time it will take to download and install the game first.

Baldur’s Gate 3 launches at 11 pm on August 3 (MYT time), so you might have to leave it downloading overnight to play it the following day, depending on how long these things usually take for your connection. Unfortunately, developer Larian Studios has not made pre-loading available on PC. Early Access players also won’t have their saves carried over to the full game. In fact, Larian has asked Early Access players to not only delete their saves, but remove all mods and then uninstall the game entirely to, “reduce the risk of file conflicts when the final game downloads.”

Say goodbye to your Early Access characters, then. There is a reason the game is launching without a preload option too: Steam doesn’t support preloads for Early Access games, seeing as switching to preload in the midst of Early Access would break the game for players still playing it in Early Access. The game will also only launch on PC tomorrow, with a PlayStation 5 version coming on September 6, which is the same day Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG Starfield launches.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will also launch on Mac and Xbox consoles at an undefined date, due to Larian needing to put extra work in to make sure the Series S port works just as well as the Series X’s. The game will also be Steam Deck verified at launch, so players shouldn’t have problems taking it on the go.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s hefty 122GB download size isn’t that surprising, considering the scale of this game and its many branching storylines, which can go in different directions due to all the gameplay mechanics, party members and dialogue choices players have access to. You can even allow your character to tap into the mind flayer parasites infecting their brains for special abilities, all of which come at a cost because of course they do.
