Star Wars Outlaws follows a Han Solo-like scoundrel in an open-world adventure across the galaxy's criminal underworld.
Ubisoft showed up at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase today to unveil Star Wars Outlaws, an upcoming open-world game from Massive Entertainment, the creators of The Division series. The game launches in 2024.
Watch the trailer below:
We didn't get any gameplay for this today - that's set to arrive during tomorrow's Ubisoft Forward games showcase. The CG trailer follows a young woman named Kay Vess who seems to hail from the Star Wars universe’s seedy crime-ridden underbelly, where blasters and smuggling jobs are all the rage. Kay and her adorable animal companion Nix get roped into a job by an old friend named Jalen.Â
Here’s Ubisoft’s description of the game:Â
Experience the first-ever open world Star Wars game, set between the events ofThe Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Explore distinct planets across the galaxy, both iconic and new. Risk it all as Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted.
Calling this the first open-world Star Wars game feels disingenuous, given that both LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor did the open-world thing already, and quite well at that. Massive Entertainment is well-experienced in crafting open world games like these however, having worked on The Division and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora for Ubisoft as well. This is right up their alley.Â
While the trailer doesn’t give us much to go on, one can safely expect this to be a narrative-driven game that swaps out the franchise’s iconic lightsabers for a more grounded story headed by blasters and ill-advised criminal capers.
