Project Q is Sony’s new handheld Nintendo Switch-like gaming device.
Sony took to today’s PlayStation showcase to reveal Project Q, an all-new handheld device that allows users to stream games from their gaming libraries on the go. Don’t expect this to be a follow-up to the PSP or PS Vita, however.
Here’s the announcement video:
According to PlayStation head Jim Ryan, Project Q features an eight-inch display with JoyCon-like DualSense controllers attached to each side. It’s essentially Sony’s answer to the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch, with the important caveat that it can only stream games from your PlayStation 5 games library. Although it wasn’t confirmed, it sounds like the device relies on Sony’s Remote Play feature.
Remote Play allows users to stream games from their PlayStation consoles to a mobile device as long as both are on a shared Wi-Fi network. The two DualSense halves attached to Project Q will function just like a normal DualSense controller, which means that it also comes with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Unfortunately, it won’t be able to run PlayStation VR games. It also doesn't run games natively, so you'll need a good Wi-Fi connection for it to work.
Sony also announced a new pair of wireless PS5 earbuds which bring lossless audio and, “next-generation audio immersion,” to console and PC owners. The device fits right in with the PS5’s design visually, looking just like a tiny version of the console that reveals a pair of earbuds when its white case is slipped off.
Sony hasn’t announced an official name or release date for either of these accessories. Hopefully, Project Q will come out in time for Spider-Man 2. Check out all of the games revealed during today's PlayStation Showcase today here.
