WB announces Quidditch game to make up for Hogwarts Legacy omission

You can finally play Quidditch, just not in Hogwarts Legacy.

WB Games announced this week that it’s making a standalone multiplayer game based on Quidditch, the fictional sport played by magic-users in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The fast-paced competitive game should satisfy longtime fans of the franchise, who might have taken ire with its absence in Hogwarts Legacy.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is developed by Unbroken Studios, a game studio that most recently assisted in development of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and released a battle royale game called Fractured Lands. Unbroken Studios has been working on the game for a few years now, and now plans to rope fans into upcoming playtests.

The developer describes Quidditch Champions as, “a complete, standalone Quidditch experience,” that, “engages players in the sport of Quidditch and other broomstick adventures alongside friends in a competitive, multiplayer setting.” Judging by that description, it sounds like you’ll be able to play more than just Quidditch when the game launches. Players will also be able to create their own characters to play Quidditch with, much like Hogwarts Legacy.

Quidditch was notably absent in WB Games’ smash-hit Harry Potter game Hogwarts Legacy this year, despite the game otherwise allowing players to live out their Hogwarts-attending fantasies to the fullest. Not being able to play Quidditch felt like a glaring omission in a game that tried to be as faithful as possible to the books, but WB Games might be trying to make up for it with this standalone title.

Quidditch was played by real-life teams up until series author J.K. Rowling chose to espouse anti-trans rhetoric on as many public platforms as possible, at which point Quidditch teams and organisations chose to rebrand their version of the sport as ‘Quadball’ to distance themselves from the controversy. Warner Bros. is clearly less inclined to distance itself from the moneymaking machine that is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, however. Hogwarts Legacy was a hit, and the company has already greenlit a decade-long TV series adaptation of the Harry Potter books.
