Pokemon Scarlet and Violet announce two-part expansion with new region

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s upcoming expansion will introduce five new Pokemon, including two legendaries.

This week’s Pokemon Presents revealed an upcoming expansion for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet titled The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. The expansion will be released in two parts - The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk - both of which are planned to launch later in 2023.

Watch the trailer below:

Surprisingly, this expansion will take players to a whole new region outside of Paldea, where Scarlet and Violet take place. The player will venture to the land of Kitakami on a school trip as part of an outdoors study program, which is being held by the academy and another local school jointly. The Indigo Disk similarly whisks players away to a sister school of their own academy called Blueberry Academy, where they’ll act as exchange students.

It sounds like both expansions will be set in different locations with different characters, but ultimately link together to tell a connected story. The Teal Mask will launch first in Fall 2023, introducing players to a new Legendary Pokemon called Ogerpon and three other new Pokemon called Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti (okey dokey, hunky dory and serendipity. Get it?). These Pokemon play into The Teal Mask’s theme of folktales spread around by the rustic Kitakami village players visit in the expansion, where great mountains, rice paddies and apple orchards surround its people.

The Indigo Disk will launch later in the year, and it includes a new Legendary called Terapagos. Both parts will also bring 230 older-gen Pokemon to Scarlet and Violet, which had previously been missing from the games. You’ll have to reach the Treasure Hunt chapter of the main game before being able to start the expansion, which means that new players can have a very different party going into the late game depending on when they choose to take on the DLC.

Here’s what The Teal Mask’s Legendary Ogerpon looks like:
