New Final Fantasy 16 trailer previews combat and power-hungry kingdoms

Square Enix has confirmed that development on Final Fantasy 16 is almost complete.

In what has turned out to be a rather eventful week in gaming, Square Enix has dropped a new trailer for Final Fantasy 16. The video gives us a better look at the many kingdoms that vye for power in the realm of Valisthea, as the power of the Crystals threaten to either bring dominance or destruction to them all.

Watch it below:

The new trailer, titled Ambition, fleshes out the world of Final Fantasy 16 - one that our protagonist Clive Rosfield is going to navigate while on a dark quest for revenge. The game takes place in a medieval fantasy land called Valisthea, where most of its kingdoms are at war over the power of the Crystals. Each of these kingdoms is championed by a Dominant, a title reserved for individuals who have the ability to summon Eikons - massive magical deities you might recognise from previous Final Fantasy games, like Ifrit and Garuda.

The new trailer introduces us to two new Dominants, Dion Lesage, who can summon the power of Bahamut, and Barnabas Tharmr, who can summon Odin into battle. As Clive explores Valisthea, his journey might bring him into conflict with other Dominants - since they all seem to be an unfriendly, power-hungry bunch. The main story of Final Fantasy 16 follows Clive as he’s tasked to protect his younger brother Joshua, who happens to be the Dominant of the Phoenix.

Final Fantasy 16’s director Hiroshi Takai confirmed that the game is now in its final stages of development, saying, “As the game edges closer to completion, the team has turned its full attention to debugging and final adjustments. Now that things are starting to come together, the game is sizing up to be something truly special.” The game launches in Summer 2023 on the PlayStation 5.
