John Williams will score a theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi, which starts streaming on Disney+ in May.
Even at the age of 90, John Williams is not leaving the Star Wars universe behind. According to Variety, the composer is scoring a theme for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The show will follow the adventures of the fan-favourite Jedi, set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Variety states that the composer recorded the, “musical signature,” for the series under tight security last week with a Los Angeles orchestra. It sounds like Lucasfilm wanted to keep the composer’s return under wraps for now. This isn’t the first time John Williams has returned to write a theme for a Star Wars property, however. Williams previously wrote the theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story and the Galaxy’s Edge theme park in Disneyland.
Most recently, he scored the Star Wars sequel trilogy, the last entry of which hit theaters in 2019. Williams’ work on the Star Wars franchise has earned wide acclaim and for good reason, too. His scores for the original Star Wars trilogy earned multiple awards, and that hot streak continued into the prequel trilogy starting with 1999’s The Phantom Menace.
Williams is only scoring the theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi, and we still have no word on the show’s main composer. That makes the rest of this series’ soundtrack something of a mystery. Meanwhile, Williams continues to be active on the movie side of things. The composer is working on scores for Steven Spielberg’s The Fabermans and Indiana Jones 5.
Obi-Wan Kenobi hits Disney+ on May 25, 2022. The show is directed by Deborah Chow with scripts from Joby Harold. Ewan McGregor returns as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Hayden Christensen returns as the villainous Darth Vader. Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse also return from Revenge of the Sith as Owen and Beru Lars.
