From Godzilla x Kong to Gladiator 2, there's a ton of exciting movies to look forward to this year.
There is a lot of - as Martin Scorcese would put it - ‘cinema’ to look forward to this year. Even if you’re tired of fun superhero capers like the Deadpool and Wolverine-led Deadpool 3, there’s plenty of large-scale sci-fi (Dune: Part Two) and action-comedies (Argylle) to look forward to this year. A few game adaptations are even hitting the big screen this year: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Borderlands.
Spies, superheroes and Godzilla; this year has it all. These are our most anticipated movies of 2024:
Argylle (February 2)
First up is Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman)’s new action-comedy Argylle, centering on the eponymous fictional superspy (Henry Cavill) who stars in books written by Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). When her latest book is discovered to have close ties to a real-life ongoing case of espionage, shadowy parties begin to take an unwelcome interest in her and her writing. The movie's all-star cast includes Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa, Catherine O’Hara and John Cena.
Dune: Part Two (March 1)
Denis Villeneuve finally completes his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s timeless sci-fi novel Dune this year. In this sequel, Paul Atreides teams up with Chani and the Fremen to get his revenge against the imperialistic conspirators who annihilated his family, and prevent a terrible future while at it. Kill two birds with one sandworm, and all that.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (March 29)
The Ghostbusters return for another dose of 80s nostalgia, as newly-unleashed supernatural forces cause an icy weather phenomenon called the ‘Death Chill’ to descend upon New York City. To prevent another ice age, Ghostbusters young and old team up to… well, bust some ghosts.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (March 29)
Godzilla’s having an absolute blast in cinema lately, between the critically-acclaimed Godzilla: Minus One hitting theaters, a guest spot in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and now this: a sequel to Godzilla Vs. Kong that puts the titular monsters on the same team for once. When a new big threat rises from the Hollow Earth to devastate mankind, Godzilla and Kong join ranks to smash it to pieces.
Abigail (April 19)
A group of kidnappers are tasked with capturing and guarding the daughter of a powerful figure, only to realise that they’ve been trapped in a house with a monster. This horror movie comes from Scream (2022) and Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
Civil War (April 26)
Alex Garland (Ex Machina) helms this dystopian film set in the near future, where the United States government has become a dictatorship and partisan extremist militias commit political violence regularly. A team of journalists seek to document the ongoing civil war as they travel across the United States.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 10)
Meant to launch a sequel trilogy to Matt Reeves’ Planet of the Apes movies, this sequel takes place 300 years after War for the Planet of the Apes. Civilisations of apes have taken the planet by storm while humans have regressed into a feral state. The ape leader Proximus Caesar begins to pervert Caesar’s teachings to enslave other clans, causing a common chimpanzee named Noa to embark on a harrowing journey with a human named Mae to determine the future of both their species.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24)
George Miller’s highly-anticipated follow-up to Mad Max: Fury Road is a prequel that follows Furiosa, the one-armed rebel leader who worked with Max to overthrow a dictator. A much younger Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) falls into the hands of a biker horde led by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), who grapples with Immortan Joe for power.
Ballerina (June 7)
A ballerina from John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is getting her own spin-off movie. The story follows the ballerina-assassin Rooney (Ana de Armas) as she hunts down the people who killed her family. Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick, Norman Reedus, Ian McShane and Keanu Reeves also star.
Inside Out 2 (June 14)
Riley’s core emotions return in this Pixar sequel, which sees her grow into a teenager and thus start to struggle with a host of new emotions. One of these is Anxiety (Maya Hawke), a new occupant of Riley’s mind that the old gang - led by Joy - will now have to deal with.
Twisters (July 9)
It’s not easy for remakes to pique our interest, but this one has a few things going for it - namely the fact that it’s directed by Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung. The original 1996 movie followed a group of amateur storm chasers trying to deploy a tornado research device during a severe outbreak in Oklahoma. Twisters (2024) will star Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Kiernan Shipka and more in an ensemble cast.
Deadpool 3 (July 26)
Deadpool and Wolverine’s long-awaited team-up is shaping up to be the event of the summer. Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but we do know that the movie will integrate Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool from Fox’s X-Men universe into the MCU - we just don't know how. Hugh Jackman also returns as Wolverine, and characters from previous Deadpool movies are set to return too.
Borderlands (August 9)
Eli Roth’s star-studded Borderlands movie has trouble written all over it. The game adaptation of Gearbox’s hit looter-shooter franchise follows Lilith as she searches for the daughter of a powerful figure with a team of misfits - Roland, Tiny Tina, Krieg, Tannis and Claptrap. The movie’s casting (Kevin Hart as Roland? Cate Blanchett as Lilith?) indicates that it might stray from the source material some, and with director Eli Roth getting replaced in reshoots by Deadpool’s Tim Miller, I’m personally interested to see if this production will manage to pull it together by the time it’s out.
Alien: Romulus (August 16)
Evil Dead (2013) director Fede Álvarez is helming an all-new Alien movie, which takes the franchise back to basics while ignoring the Xenomorph origin story told in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. This horror movie stars a young cast, and is set between Alien and Aliens.
Beetlejuice 2 (September 6)
The fantasy horror comedy Beetlejuice is getting a sequel with Tim Burton back at the helm. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara return while Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega also stars.
Gladiator 2 (November 22)
Speaking of sequels to legendary classics, Ridley Scott is returning to Gladiator with a sequel revolving around Commodus’ nephew Lucius (Paul Mescal), who is now a grown man. Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi, Joseph Quinn, Pedro Pascal, May Calamawy and more stars.
Wicked: Part 1 (November 27)
Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh and Ethan Slater star in this highly-anticipated adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical Wicked. Part 1 is set in the Land of Oz and follows a green-skinned woman named Elphaba as she slowly but surely becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (December 20)
Sonic the Hedgehog returns with his cohorts Knuckles and Tails in tow, only this time they’ll have to contend with an almighty threat: the edgy hedgehog Shadow. Shadow is a ruthless antihero in the games who often barely gets along with Sonic, but we doubt they'll even be that well off upon their first meeting.
Nosferatu (December 25)
The unofficial but nonetheless classic Dracula adaptation Nosferatu (1922) is getting a remake from The Lighthouse and The Northman director Robert Eggers. Bill Skarsgard, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin and Willem Dafoe star.
Mickey 17 (TBA 2024)
Alas, this movie was recently taken off Warner Bros. Pictures’ release slate entirely, so we’ll just have to hope it still makes the originally-planned 2024 release window. Bong Joon-ho (Parasite, The Host)’s next film stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a disposable employee who is sent on a human expedition to colonise the ice world of Niflheim. When one iteration of Mickey dies, a new body regenerates with most of his memories intact. Steven Yuen, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo also star.
