Tundra Esports fell victim to a surprising upset from NAVI while Aurora were booted out by Team Spirit.
European Dota 2 powerhousesTundra Esports and
Aurora Gaming have both been knocked out of the PGL Wallachia Season 5 Playoffs, exiting in the Top 8 and earning US$40,000 each in consolation from the US$1 million prize pool.
In the lower bracket, Aurora fell 0-2 to Team Spirit, a tough but expected result given Spirit's track record. Tundra's departure, however, came as a surprise, as they were swept 0-2 by
Natus Vincere (NAVI)— a team many had considered underdogs entering the event.
This particular victory for NAVI further drew attention to their PGL Wallachia Season 5 campaign. The team, headlined by notable talent like Artem “Yuragi” Golubiev and
Matthew “Ari” Walker, finished third in a competitive Group Stage, following behind powerhouses Spirit and
Gaimin Gladiators.
Despite being pushed to the lower bracket by Xtreme Gaming on the first day of Playoffs, NAVI’s bounce-back against Tundra has secured them a Top 6 finish—a feat made more impressive considering their inconsistent form earlier this year and the looming disbandment of the roster to make way for the more successful
NAVI Junior squad.
Tundra’s elimination is quite the upset, especially as the team was touted as the strongest earlier this season–claiming multiple tournament victories and podium finishes with ease. This fifth Wallachia tournament marks the team’s first time dropping lower than a Top 6 placement this year.
The next elimination sees Aurora exit the tournament alongside Tundra. The relatively new Eastern European force had dropped to the lower bracket following a narrow 1-2 defeat to Team Liquid. Facing elimination, they were met by Spirit, who had surprisingly lost 0-2 to
BetBoom Team. Despite a competitive game two, Spirit managed a clean 2-0 sweep, ending Aurora’s run.
What’s next in PGL Wallachia S5
Looking ahead, the lower bracket continues with NAVI facing BetBoom, while Team goes up against Xtreme. The winners of those series will advance to the lower bracket semifinals, where they’ll meet the loser of the Gaimin Gladiators-Liquid matchup in what would be another thrilling round of the PGL Wallachia Season 5 Playoffs.
