Team SMG eliminated from TI12; group stage phase two matchups set

Team SMG will be the fourth team to exit TI12 from the group stage after a 2-0 loss against Evil Geniuses in an elimination tiebreaker game for Group A.

There were only two teams from Southeast Asia as The International 2023 (TI12) commenced, and going into the playoffs, there will only be one. Team SMG were eliminated from TI12 after losing 2-0 to Evil Geniuses in an elimination tiebreaker game. Both teams ended phase one of the group stage with a score of 2-6, but there was only one team that was dominant in the tiebreaker.

The matchup between these two teams on the first day of TI12 ended 1-1. Team SMG were always on the backfoot, playing with two standins. The lack of experience showed, as when it mattered, EG brought on their best game to win quite comfortably in both games. Team SMG joins Thunder Awaken, beastcoast and PSG Quest, who were eliminated from their respective groups.

The remaining 16 teams survive the first elimination scare, and will definitely get to play at least one game in the playoffs.

With phase one complete, phase two of the group stage will commence tomorrow (14th of October). The top teams from each group had to make their decisions on which team they wanted to face, and the results are in.

There are eight best-of-3s, and the winner of each will go to the upper bracket. The losers will go down to the lower bracket. By the end of Sunday the 15th of October, we will have an idea of what the main playoff bracket looks like.
