A look at the playstyles of the top 8 teams at TI13 based on farm distribution

A lot can be said about a Dota 2 team based on how they distribute their farm. Here, we take a deep dive and look at that data for the top 8 teams at TI13.

The Road to the International has come to an end, and The International 2024 (TI13) will take place in the Royal Arena in Copenhagen with the top 8 teams, starting on the 13th of September. At GosuGamers, we have a bit of tradition to take a look at the farm distributions of the top 8 teams and see if any of the numbers stand out, and that’s exactly what we have here.

How exactly is farm distribution analyzed? It is done in two ways – based on GPM and last hits. The percentage distribution of each player in terms of GPM of the entire team and last hits of the entire team is looked at. The numbers for the top 8 teams based on position at TI13 are shown below. The green cells indicate the highest number for a position, whereas the red cells indicate the lowest numbers for a position.

All data has been taken from datDota.

The first thing that jumps out is that all positions are being played as expected, meaning carry is the position 1 role, mid is position 2 and offlane is position 3 for cores for the majority of the teams, as well as for the average of all teams. This was not the case at TI12. At TI12, the offlane was the position 2 role and the mid role was position 3 based on the farm distribution. This can happen depending on the meta, where at times it is conducive for the mid player to make early rotations and on a tempo controlling hero while the offlaner takes time to farm up team fight items. In fact, Tundra Esports did just that in their TI11 triumph. But for the meta that has come with patch 7.37, most teams have resorted to the traditional roles with respect to farm.

That isn’t to say, however, that there are some deviations. The first ones are in the position 4 role – Team Liquid’s Samuel “Boxi” Svahn has the lowest farm priority in position 4s, and is also the lowest on his team. On the other hand, the team that they are going to face in the upper bracket, Cloud9, have the highest farm preference for their position 4 player  Vladislav “Kataomi” Semenov! There is quite a bit of disparity in the last hits of these two players. This is because Boxi plays a lot of playmaking heroes like Dark Willow and Tusk who make early moves and focus on getting kills, whereas Kataomi’s most-played hero at TI13 is Tinker (5 out of the 10 games), and he also has a Doom pick in there. Boxi’s lack of farm is picked up by his carry, Michael “miCKe” Vu, while in case of Kataomi, the farm comes at the cost of his carry Alimzhan “Watson” Islambekov’s farm, who has the lowest farm priorities amongst all carries. This is all, of course, by design. There is a distinct difference between the playstyles of the two teams, and seeing them go head to head for a place in the upper bracket final of TI13 will be a treat.

Gaimin Gladiators were a team that divided their farm relatively evenly at TI12. If one of their cores was having a rough game, the other two could pick up the slack. But this year, they have changed their style by giving Quinn “Quinn” Callahan the least farm priority amongst cores and more of a playmaking role. Quinn has played 10 heroes in his 12 games, making it hard to draft against him, especially if GG have the last pick. He secures the early game for the team with dominant lane heroes like Storm Spirit, Queen of Pain, Viper and Dazzle. At TI12, his most played heroes were Pangolier and Necrophos, who have more of a farming kit (especially Necrophos) as compared to any of the heroes Quinn prefers in the current meta.

Another standout albeit expected stat is Ammar “Ammar” Altaf having the highest farm priority amongst offlaners and matching the farm (in terms of GPM) of his mid lane teammate Stanislav “Malr1ne” Potorak on Team Falcons. On the flip side, Aurora Gaming have a very low farm priority for their offlaner Anucha “Jabz” Jirawong, with nearly 65% of their farm going to their carry Nuengnara “23savage” Teeramahanon and mid Artem “Lorenof” Melnick.

There are lot of different playstyles within the top 8 teams at TI13, as the farm distribution indicates. Even though the prize pool isn’t at the lofty heights of what it used to be, the final push for the Aegis is bound to be as exciting as any of the previous iterations of The International.
