Cammy, Zangief and newcomer Lily are confirmed for Street Fighter 6’s roster.
Capcom unveiled three new additions to Street Fighter 6’s roster during a recent State of Play showcase, and one of them is an entirely fresh face to the franchise. The new trailer reintroduces Cammy and Zangief as returning fighters to the game, and Lily as an all-new addition. While Zangief and Lily look fun in their own right, the Internet pretty much only has eyes for Cammy at this point.
Street Fighter 6’s roster consists of 18 playable characters in total, and one of them was bound to be Cammy given her ongoing popularity. Cammy White debuted in Super Street Fighter 2 and will return here with familiar attacks like Cannon Spike and Spiral Arrow, and a few Super Art moves. She has an all-new look that does away with her signature leotard, boots and beret, and some would argue that this is for the better. Early leaks from the sequel have revealed that her classic look will return as an in-game skin anyway, so it’s not worth throwing a fuss over.
It’s not that people have rejected her redesign - they’ve actually embraced it with great enthusiasm:
Great enthusiasm being the, uh, polite term to use here. Even the official Street Fighter Twitter account has noticed all the recent Cammy chatter:
Interestingly, fans have also noticed that one of her Super Art moves is lifted directly from an iconic scene from the Street Fighter 2 animated movie:
Clearly, Capcom loves Cammy just as much as the fans - but the rest of its newly-revealed fighters haven't been left behind either. Zangief returns from Street Fighter 2 and the weird-looking Street Fighter VR game in full barrel-chested glory, bringing back moves like Screw Piledriver to toss the rest of the roster around as they deserve. Zangief hasn’t changed much design-wise, but he returns with slightly less-exaggerated musculature compared to Ryu. This has been a really weird article to write so far.
Lily looks fantastic. Unlike the rest of the roster revealed this week, Lily doesn’t fight with her fists - she brings a pair of war clubs into battle, using them to toss enemies into the air, juggle them and knock them back. Much like T. Hawk, she’s a member of the Thunderfoot tribe, and appears to be new to the fight considering she K.O.s an enemy by slipping up during an attack and falling flat on their back. Give her time, she’s getting the hang of it.
Street Fighter 6 launches on June 2, and we wouldn’t be surprised if Capcom’s million-dollar SF6 champ turns out to be a Cammy main at this rate.
