Confirmed changes to Tyrael on the horizon

Tyrael was recently buffed to be more mana efficient--cool. But what about his other changes that were confirmed to be on the way?

The last buff to Tyrael was a minor one that doesn't really change the hero's playstyle or power level. Sure, you can spam your abilities more frequently, but that is about it. In this thread on the official Heroes of the Storm forums, players gathered to discuss whether or not Tyrael needed significant changes.

The majority of posters seemed to agree with the original claim that Tyrael was unloved and far too weak. Citing generic talents, low stats, and that pitiful trait everyone loves to poke fun at, a strong case was made for Tyrael's poor state and the need for a complete overhaul.

That is when Community Manager Spyrian came in to drop some seeds of hope:

Hey! I wanted to stop in this thread and let you guys know that the mana cost changes Tyrael received recently aren't the end of the road for him in terms of tweaks we have planned. It won't be a full rework, but we are looking to make a number of changes to some of Tyrael's talents with our next major patch."

Things to note here:

  • Not a major rework which may be a good thing. Heroes like Nova have become significantly worst since her change.
  • The changes are coming to the next major patch-- not a balance update.
  • This likely means that when Guldan is released, these Tyrael changes will take affect.

New talents are all that Tyrael really needs to play and feel better. His base kit is already strong and it's not like Tyrael sees no competitive play. Both of his Heroics are very strong, but the only real talent that matters is the level 16 Holy Ground upgrade to El'Druin's Might. Now that Regeneration Master was nerfed, most of Tyrael's talents are largely unimportant and any build is viable as they are all medicore.

Tyrael is one of the oldest heroes in the game and, like Arthas, should benefit greatly from a new pass at talents and abilities. Many Heroes fans might not remember that Tyrael used to be picked in every single competitive game there was, so perhaps Blizzard is rightfully cautious about any major buffs.
